Second Post-Adoptive Visit

We had our second and final post-adoptive placement appointment yesterday. The visit went exceptionally well.

For those of you who may be wondering what types of concerns are covered in a post-adoptive visit, I’ll cover them briefly (although if you survived the homestudy, you’ll be just fine!):

Children:
* General physical health (gaining in height and weight; overall good health; whether or not there have been any medical issues, or if the child has special medical needs, what the prognosis is/how things are going.
* Mental heath: If there are any mental health issues, the caseworker will want to know what the diagnosis is, if any; the prognosis; if the child is in therapy and how that’s going; if there are any issues of concern relating to the diagnosis.
* Developmental issues: If the children are school-aged, the social worker will ask about general academic progress; is the child on track compared to same-age peers; if there are any areas of weakness or concern; peer relationships; and how the child is functioning in a school environment. If the child is not yet in school, the issues are more to do with developmental milestones: are the children doing what most same-aged peers are able to do (letter/number/color recognition; sitting up/walking/talking/running, etc.).

* Adapting to family life: The social worker will want to know if the children are adapting to their new home life; how they are relating to siblings and parents; are they children attaching?

Parents:
* Are finances still stable?
* Is parental health still good?
* How is the marriage (for non-single parents) weathering the addition of a new addition or additions?
* Are there any concerns?

The social worker handling our case was thrilled to hear the progress the children are making. As this is the final post-adoptive appointment, our case is pretty much closed, though, our caseworker is so committed to “her” families, that she wants us to keep her updated on how the kids are doing, and contact her if anything comes up that we’d like to “sound her out” about if needed.

We’re so thankful to have such a committed ally, and that we’ve hurdled yet another milestone!
