My husband is an avid comic book collector. Most comic books are numbered as you might expect – 1, 2, 3 and so on. However, occasionally, you will find one numbered ½. Seeing this was so odd to me, I asked my husband about it, and he said that it’s used to denote something that happened before the series – like a prequel of sorts.

Thus, it’s a fitting description of Mother’s Day for me. We are in month nine of the wait, and my children don’t even know that they are being adopted yet, much less by me. However, during our weekly Sunday afternoon calls, my ever-thoughtful daughter said to me, “Happy Mother’s Day! I’m gonna draw you a picture tonight and send it to you!” She then went on to ask me which characters I liked that she knew how to draw, and we settled on Cinderella.

Little does this girl know that I am to be her new mama, and that, Lord willing, we’ll be sharing Mother’s Day together next year – Mother’s Day 1!

But, Mother’s Day did turn my thoughts to our children’s birthmother and birth grandmother, both of whom I created handmade cards for. I have learned so much here at AdoptionBlogs about firstparents and the toll Mother’s Day takes upon them, that I really wanted to acknowledge them both in a respectful way, and it was my way of reaching out to them on this day fraught with meaning. I didn’t want to just go out and buy something. I really wanted to take the time and effort to create something unique, that showed I really put some thought into the cards, and thereby, into our new relationship with each other.

I hope it will be the first of many more holidays together – not just Mother’s Day.
