Amy Angel Goes Home: A Heavenly Tale of Adoption Kathleen Lathrop
Illustrated by Erik Bakke
Ages 3-9

Reviewers say this book is most appropriate for children adopted as infants. The reviewers agreed that this book’s purpose is to promote adoption as part of God’s plan to create families.

One reviewer, a birth mother in an open adoption, said the book made her sick to her stomach. She cited the book’s passing reference to a “birthlady,” which she felt relegated birth parents to “middleman” figurehead status. She and other reviewers felt the “birthlady” reference disrespected birth parents and the important role they play in their child’s life.

Another reviewer didn’t like the fact that all the children depicted in the book are Caucasian.

Generally, however, reviewers raved about the book, calling it “heartwarming,” “reassuring,” and “the best adoption book I’ve seen for explaining adoption to children.”

I had a little trouble deciphering the plot based on the reviews I read. Apparently, Baby Amy Angel and Charlie Cherub are in the waiting-to-be-born heaven with the Great Guardian Angel. Amy learns that God’s messenger will deliver her to the (adoptive) parents whom God wants her to have, while Charlie learns that he’ll be delivered to his biological parents.

One reviewer writes: “The book tells the story of how the Great Guardian Angel preps kids for birth in this world, and their parents to receive them…The Great Guardian Angel teaches both wee ones to focus on the Light of Love in their future parents’ hearts.

I would be interested to know what adoptees think of Angel Amy. Some of the adoptees I know are pretty tough on most adoption books for children.

From what I am beginning to figure out is that what most adoptive moms might consider "heartwarming" in these type of books, most birth moms really dislike and find most distasteful.
