I thank my God in all my remembrance of you (Philippians 1:3)
In an interesting display of “harmonic convergence”, cable television played both versions of
The Parent Trap on two different channels during the same time slot. As I flipped back and forth between them, I noticed both versions had the scene wherein one of the twins meets the grandfather for the first time and begins sniffing him. The grandfather asks what she's doing and the twin replies, “I'm making a memory. Years from now when I'm a grown up, I want to remember that my grandfather always smelled like tobacco and peppermint.”
So it was this afternoon, when my daughter and I attended a Mother/Daughter Tea held at the home of her Bible Class teacher to celebrate the end of the class quarter. Eight little girls, their mothers, and a few specially invited guests enjoyed a full-on grown-up tea using real china with a complete tea table of sweets, savories, and delicious food. The girls all sat at one table, and the grown-ups at another.
We played several games like guessing how many jelly beans were in the jar, or how many inches of licorice were in another jar. There was a tossing contest using foam balls (which I played embarrassingly poorly at, apparently!). My favorite part, however, was when each Mother/Daughter pair had to share a story about themselves. It was really easy for th other Mother/Daughter teams to raid their memory banks for a story. But, my daughter and I have had less than one-year together! So, it was really hard to come up with something that was “just” the two of us, but we managed, and it was very, very sweet and touching!
After our stories, the party began wrapping up, and the girls walked away with enormous goodie bags with all kinds of girly goodness contained within! All-in-all, it was one of those magical moments in time, and you just know that you've made a memory. Hopefully my daughter, like the twin in
The Parent Trap, will remember this very special afternoon when she's all grown up!
