Greetings! My name is Laura Christianson and I have the privilege of hosting the “Christian Adoption” blog here at adoption.com. What exactly is “Christian Adoption?” I’ve been pondering that for some time.
I’d like this blog to speak to all who are interested in adoption. That includes:
- prospective adoptive parents
- adoptive families
- birth parents and their extended family
- people of all ages who were adopted
- adoption professionals
- students writing research papers on adoption
- anyone who wants to learn more about adoption
We’ll discuss all sorts of issues pertaining to adoption – the possibilities are endless. And we’ll do so from a Christian world view.
That doesn’t mean all my posts will mention God. That doesn’t mean I’ll preach at you. It does mean that my faith colors and influences everything I write. I hope to be a good listener and a gentle advisor.
My experience with adoption
I have spent the last 13 years as an adoptive mom. We adopted our first son domestically when he was six days old. Our son’s birth mother and I love to write, so during the first two years of his life, we sent dozens of letters and pictures to one another. The regular exchange of letters helped us build a trusting friendship and we mutually decided to open our adoption (more on that in another post). When our son was 3 ½, we adopted another baby boy, and we’ve enjoyed an open adoption with his birth family from the start.
While the bulk of my personal experience is with domestic open adoption, I’m also familiar with other types of adoption: international, foster-adopt and the various types of domestic adoption. For the past nine years or so, I’ve been a freelance writer specializing in adoption issues. In addition to having dozens of adoption-related articles published in magazines, I’m writing a book about adoption. My “Exploring Adoption” blog, which I started in 2004, received a “Best of the Web” rating from Forbes magazine. I’m intrigued by the many facets of adoption and never run out of things to write about the topic.
