Today we celebrated my youngest son’s fifth birthday! Though today was truly a happy occasion, I remember how I felt last year at this time. We had been told that the adoption would probably be finalized by the holidays of 2006, thus my son would be here for his fourth birthday. When it became obvious that would not happen, I did what I usually do during times of duress – I knitted. I knitted him a little hat and scarf set. His former foster mom recently sent it to us with a few other things she found that belonged to the kids. My son saw it and remembered it!

So, fast forward a full year, and here we are! My son is now with us, and we’re celebrating his fifth birthday (and yes, there was knitting involved – I also knit when I am happy – face it…I knit all the time!).

As is tradition in our household, the birthday honoree gets “the big stuff,” but everyone else generally gets a little something, too. Today was no different, though my youngest did get to unveil his swag first! He got a train table, some Diego mugs for his hot chocolate, and he did try on the sweater mom is making so she could test the sizing! My son requested and received hot chocolate, courtesy of my grandmother’s recipe for the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted. I guess my kids think so, too, because they wanted to pretend they were at Starbucks (their way of saying it was pretty fancy!).

He began receiving phone calls mid-morning; hordes of admiring well-wishers serenading him. All he could reply in turn was that he didn’t get any cake! Patience child – it wasn’t even lunch time yet!

After hubby put the train table together, the kids played fairly cooperatively for most of the day. Then we went out for dinner at “the duck restaurant” (it overlooks a duck pond), and had the piece de resistance, cake featuring Nickelodeon’s Diego (got the idea that he’s into Diego, did you?).

Being the first Wednesday of the month, our usual mid-week Bible class becomes song practice for the congregation to learn new songs (or learn older ones better!). Both of my boys usually take a turn at leading a song, and both did a great job. We feel so blessed that all three of our children love the Lord!

Then it was time to come home, have family prayers and go to bed. All in all, it was a wonderful day, and we feel so blessed that our son is here sharing it with us!
