My family loves all those television shows with outtakes, bloopers and videos sent in by viewers. Last night, however, I felt like I was trapped in one!
I teach the 4’s and 5’s Bible class on Wednesday nights. The Sunday Bible class teacher had discussed the story of Anna and Simeon (Luke 2:21-40) with the children. I was reviewing the lesson with the children to see what they remembered. The conversation went a little something like this:
Me: So who remembers the names of the people we learned about on Sunday?
[Several children raise their hands, so I go down the row]:
Student #1: Anna and Simeon
Me: Anna and Simeon! That’s right! High five! What else do you remember about Anna and Simeon?
[Because the first child I called on got it right, I kept going down the row]:
Student # 2: Anna and Cinnamon …
Me: Whoa, there! Wait a minute … Anna and Cinnamon? Don’t you mean Anna and Simeon?
Student #2: That’s what I said, Anna and Cinnamon!
Me: (Correcting) Simeon
Student # 2: (Repeating) Cinnamon
Me: (Correcting) Simeon
Student # 2: (Repeating) Cinnamon
Me: Sim
Student # 2: Sim
Me: Eee
Student # 2: Eee
Me: On
Student # 2: On
Me: Simeon
Student # 2: Cinnamon
Have you guessed by now who Student # 2 is? My youngest son! Now, in all fairness, I think part of this was honest enunciation stuff (he has tubes in his ears, and is catching up on language he missed while they were sorting out the hearing issues), but I think a little bit may have been spurred on by the giggles his answers elicited, and played up a bit for laughs!
Dr. Kevin Leman, the noted faith-based psychologist, in his book,
The Birth Order Book, states that “cubs” (the youngest in a family) usually fall into the “clown” role in the family. He further states that he can tell right off the bat which birth order someone is in within a few minutes of talking to them, begging the inference that this is a pretty commonplace occurrence for lastborns! Nice to know that my youngest is conforming to his lot in life!
The Bible class quarter just started, so I’m sure I’ll have more tales from the front lines for you!
