Road Trip: Day 1 - Leaving CA

After going to bed for just a couple of hours at 1:00am, we woke up at 3:00am and went to the airport shortly after 4. Note to self: Night owls, do not attempt this at home! What was I thinking?

Remember all that yesterday about the wonders of the internet and e-ticketing? Scratch that! We still had to stand in line and check in (albeit it not a very long line!).

All three flights left and landed on time and were uneventful. For a domestic adoption, I still call this trip Adoption via the Trans-Siberian Express. Five states and 14 hours? Oooookay … However, it was my son’s first time flying and... more

Well, it’s finally here! We’re furiously packing and taking care of last minute details! Up until a couple of business trips last year, it had been almost 20 years since I had flown! Now with the ease of purchasing tickets online, printing e-tickets and boarding passes, I can just relax and enjoy the trip! Of course, that’s once this flurry of pre-travel activity is over!

We had to get a house-sitter for Her Divaliciousness, Catherine (otherwise known as our cat!). It seems there was no end to the number of Target trips, with other... more

road trip 1

We’re going to be traveling next week, and you get to come with us! That’s right! I will be blogging on the road, as we meet our children for the first time!

Even though this is a domestic adoption, it feels like an international one! All told, it will take us some 14 hours of travel time, three airplanes, two layovers and an hour’s drive in a rental car to get there!

The social worker handling the adoption told us today that she told the kids about our visit yesterday. The conversation went something like this:

Foster... more

Mother's Day - 1/2

My husband is an avid comic book collector. Most comic books are numbered as you might expect – 1, 2, 3 and so on. However, occasionally, you will find one numbered ½. Seeing this was so odd to me, I asked my husband about it, and he said that it’s used to denote something that happened before the series - like a prequel of sorts.

Thus, it’s a fitting description of Mother’s Day for me. We are in month nine of the wait, and my children don’t... more

Don't Underestimate the Adversary

The old adage says, “The devil is in the details” and it is so with adoption. Give me a big problem or hurdle, and shockingly, I do just fine (while holding onto God’s hand, that is!). But I do “sweat the small stuff.” Ask me to chase around little details, and then have something go wrong? That’s a recipe for disaster, and the area Satan knows is best if he wants to trip me up … and you know that’s exactly what he wants!

Be of sober spirit, be on... more

How to Handle Setbacks in Adoption

setbacks

It is said, “the course of true love never runs smoothly” and I suppose that includes adoption as well! Just as the end was in sight and we were about to set a court date to finalize things, we encountered some pretty severe obstacles. I don’t think they are deal-breakers, but they could delay things and may add some expense. I can’t really be specific, because it involves confidentiality issues, but it really made me first angry, then sad, then just really hyper because I couldn’t get my brain to shut down!

I’ve never been through... more

How to Raise Godly Girls

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. (Titus 2:3-5)

In an age of micro-minis, jelly bracelets and spring break beads, its clear we need to raise godly girls. We need to help our girls develop a moral compass,... more

Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22)

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18)

Falling in Love ...

As with most things, I came to adoption in an unconventional way. Most folks decide that they would like to adopt … do the mountain of paperwork … get the approved homestudy …get a referral … then are matched with the child who will most likely become their own.

Not so with me. Though we talked about adoption forever, it wasn’t until I sat in front of my computer, just as I am now, tooling around reading posts from some of my e-mail discussion loops. Usually, I will just scan the e-mail headers in the digest version, and even at that, I don’t... more

The time between the moment you decide to adopt and finally holding the child(ren) of your dreams spans eons. How can you survive the wait?

Pray: Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Pray for everyone involved with your adoption.
